Sanquhar Post Office, which is the world’s oldest working Post Office, today received a visit from Post Office Chief Executive Officer, Neil Brocklehurst.
On 30 April, Neil Brocklehurst, became permanent CEO for Post Office, an organisation steeped in history. To mark the first 100 days in office since his permanent appointment Neil wanted to visit postmasters across the UK, including historic record-breaking Sanquhar Post Office to get the views of Postmasters on how we can transform the Post Office together.
This month marks 390 years since The General Post Office organisation was established on 31 July 1635. There was a proclamation by King Charles 1 for a public letter-office of England and Scotland.
Sanquhar Post Office is accredited by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s oldest working Post Office. It opened in 1712 and has been in continuous operation for 313 years.
Barry and Mary Ford took over Sanquhar Post Office in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, in September 2023. They are the 16th operator of the world’s oldest operational Post Office.

With local bank branch closures, they have been able to reassure customers that they can do every day personal and business banking at Sanquhar Post Office.”
Lincolnshire-born Barry and his wife Mary from Motherwell had been living and working in Florida for 20 years when they first heard about Sanquhar Post Office being up for sale in 2020. They were pipped to the post by somebody else, a deal which subsequently had fallen through. Meanwhile, Barry and Mary had returned to the UK to live in Motherwell. They leapt at the second opportunity to take on Sanquhar Post Office when the opportunity arose as they love history and philately and are customer-focussed.
They moved from The Sunshine State, but Barry and Mary received a very warm welcome from the people of Sanquhar. They very quickly settled in and really are at the heart of the community. Tourists also make a beeline for the historic branch.

The couple have made many improvements to their branch including longer opening hours, which have seen their business grow and flourish. They have embraced the unique history of Sanquhar Post Office. The branch is decorated with a vintage Post Office BSA Bantam motorbike, old Post Office van, bicycle, ornate post box, and lots of other memorabilia.
